Inscription "Stone inscribed" in Pasir Panjang
The inscription in the form of writing carved on a giant granite rock is located at the
foot of Mount Jantan, Pasir Panjang Village, Meral Barat District, which is believed to have
existed since the IX or X century. It was first discovered by a Dutch agricultural expert named
K.F Holle.
The discovery was then reported on July 14, 1873 by K.F Holle to the Government
of Bataviaasch Genootehap van Koonstenen Wetenschapen in Batavia. Then in a not too long
period of time, the picture of the achievement arrived at the British Museum which finally
attracted researchers to Karimun. The inscription on the inscription was from six separate lines.
By historian Dr. J Brandes was successfully transcribed and translated. It reads: Mahayanika,
Galayantritasr, Gautamasripada, Mahayanika, Golapanditasri Gautamasripada. Written in
Sanskrit, the inscription was written by a Buddhist clergyman whose main theme is worship of
the Mahayana Buddha.
Now the place where the inscription stands is used as a place of worship for Buddhists
to attract tourists from ethnic Indians and Chinese to come to perform ritual prayers asking for
health, safety and the generosity of fortune. By the local government, the historic inscription
which is ten centuries old has been designated as a Cultural Conservation whose existence is
guarded and protected.
In the past, the existence of the stone inscription was right on the edge
of the sea. To be able to see it, people have to use a boat to comb the coast. But then PT Karimun
Garanit filled the coastal area up to almost a hundred meters. So now if you go there you can
go directly to the location where the site is located.
